Doesn't it always seem that once a fashion attracts the attention of fashionistas, you see the same hairstyle everywhere in all walks of life? I mean, think of the '90s "bowl" cut. Everyone had that cut, including men, women, and children. I'm not kidding when I say that while working at the salon I did 20 of these haircuts in one day. I thought I was going to get sick. And that fad lasted for years until everyone got sick.
Of course, it is very tempting to go out and get the latest hairstyle fad. In some cases, doing so can make it look like you're on the cutting edge of fashion. In other cases, getting a trendy cut can make you look like a copycat without a proper sense of fashion. So how do you know if it's okay to follow a particular fad?
First, you need to think about the reasons why you want a particular haircut.
Is it because you really like the style and think it would go well with your dress style and complement it or do you just want the cut because so-and-so has it? When it comes to style and hairstyles in particular, what you wear is an expression of who you are. You should never get a style because someone else is wearing it and it works well for them. Instead, choose styles that are true to your character, even if no one else has them.
Next, you need to consider how many other people use the style.
If there are only a few and the style is relegated to certain social circles that you are a part of, it may be a good idea to get the cut done, especially if it is an expression of your style of dress. But if everyone is getting the cut, it would seem like you are trying to copy others instead of being yourself.
If there are relatively few people you've seen wearing the haircut and none in the area where you live, a trendy cut that suits your personality could be a great way to set yourself apart from others. For example: you see a great hairstyle in a movie that you think is perfect for you. Go ahead and get the cut, but be sure to change up your style once everyone else has caught on to the idea. If you do, you will become a trendsetter rather than a follower of fashion.
