Minneapolis has agreed to pay $ 27 million to settle a lawsuit filed by George Floyd's family over his death while in police custody in a case that sparked nationwide protests against racial discrimination and security force brutality.
Black American Floyd, 46, died in May after white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin crouched with the knee on his neck for about nine minutes.
A bystander filmed Floyd's miserable pleading for help, and the video went viral and was the spark that ignited one of the largest protest movements in US history.
The Floyd family's lawyer, Benjamin Kramp, said the deal was the largest pre-trial settlement in a manslaughter lawsuit in American history.
A few days ago, the trial of the officer accused of the murder began.
The officer was holding Floyd on the evening of May 25 on suspicion of using a fake $ 20 banknote to buy cigarettes.
