American Sloane Stevens into the Round of 16 at Roland Garros
Former US Open champion Sloane Stephens beat Czech 18th seed Karolina Mokhova 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the fourth round (round of 16) in the women's singles competitions at the French Open on Saturday.
Former world number three Stevens (28 years old), who previously reached the French Open final in 2018, has fallen to 59th in the world now, but thanks to her experience and tenacity, she managed to overcome Mukhova, who is four years her junior.
Mokhova, who previously reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, faced some problems in the early stages of the match, which was held at Simon Mathieu Stadium, and was broken in the fourth game as the American won the first set in her favour.
Stevens won the US Open in 2017.
After the two players exchanged breaks twice in the second set, Stephens broke her opponent for the third time to settle the result and set up a meeting in the round of 16 with Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina or with Czech Barbora Krichkova.
