Tokyo 2020: Australian swimmer Emma McKeown wins women's 100m freestyle gold
Australian swimmer Emma McKeown met expectations and won the 100m freestyle gold on Friday, at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo until August 8.
McKeown (27 years) achieved an Olympic record of 51.96 seconds in front of the surprise games Bernadette Hughey of Hong Kong (a difference of 0.31 seconds) and her compatriot Kate Campbell (a difference of 0.56 seconds).
Canadian Benny Oleksiak, the fourth title holder and the Swedish world record holder, returning from an elbow injury, Sarah Sjostrom, finished fifth.
McKeown led her country to the title of the relay four times in the 100 m and breaking the world record on Sunday, then won the bronze in the 100 m butterfly and the bronze in the relay 4 times in the 200 m.
She raised her tally to 8 Olympic medals, including 3 gold.
On her way to her first individual Olympic title, Maicon set the fastest time this year (52.19 seconds) before her completion in Tokyo.
While the Australian women have been waiting for a singles title since Beijing 2008, they won 4 golds in Tokyo, with Ariarn Titmus and Kylie McKeon shining.
This race confirmed the brilliance of Hougie, who also won the silver in the 200m freestyle behind Titmus. Huge, who is based at the University of Michigan in the United States, became the first female swimmer from Hong Kong to compete in the World Cup final in 2019.
