Mary Quant is a Welsh fashion designer and British fashion icon known for popularizing miniskirts and hot pants. A key figure in the London-based fashion and youth movement during the 1960s, she promoted playful fashion and encouraged people to dress to please themselves rather than conform to societal norms. Hailed as the inventor of the miniskirt, one of the defining fashions of the 1960s, Quandt viewed the miniskirt as a practical and liberating development for women. Born to Welsh teachers in 1934, she grew up during the Second World War. She was too young to realize the danger of war, and she actually enjoyed war activities because she was a young adventurous soul. Her progressive parents encouraged her to pursue a career and wanted her to choose a stable career. However, Mary decided to study illustration, to which her parents reluctantly agreed. After completing her studies, she started a business with Alexander Plunkett Green whom she later married. She promoted the fun fashion wear that became hugely popular with the younger generation, and within years established herself as a British fashion icon. In addition, she is the author of the books "Quant by Quant", "Color by Quant", and "Quant on Make-Make".
Mary Quant .. Childhood and early life
Barbara Marie Quant was born on 11 February 1934, in Blackheath, London, to Jack and Mary Quant. Her parents were Welsh teachers, descended from mining families. They were well-educated people who believed that girls should study well and prove themselves professionally.
She grew up during the Second World War and her family often moved from one place to another. Too young at the time to understand the seriousness of war, she actually enjoyed the adventures it brought, often investigating crashed planes and looting wreckage.
Her initial education was haphazard due to the war. Later I went to Blackheath High School. Blessed with a flair of creative mind and artistic abilities, she developed a love for sewing at an early age and realized that she had an innate sense of fashion.
Her parents wanted her to choose a stable career, but young Mary was adamant about pursuing a creative career. She managed to win a scholarship to Goldsmiths College and her parents reluctantly allowed her to study illustration. I eventually got a diploma in art education.

Mary Quant becomes Eric's apprentice, an upscale Mayfair firm on Brook Street next to Claridge's Hotel. She was paid a meager salary and even struggled to secure proper meals.
She teamed up with former classmate Alexander Plunkett-Green and boyfriend Archie McNair to start her own business. They opened a boutique called Bazaar. A creative young woman, she encouraged a playful and spunky style of fashion that appealed to youngsters.
Always looking for new and exciting clothes for the boutique, she also started designing her own collection over time. Business prospered and she married her business partner, Alexander.
The best selling items in the store were mini skirts, funky dresses, tights, stretchy leggings, and T-shirts. Quant is credited with popularizing the miniskirt, a garment that was one of the defining fashions of the 1960s. A fashionable young woman herself, she wore miniskirts which led her clients to demand even miniskirts that became known as miniskirts.
Another common piece of clothing was colorful and patterned stockings worn with a short skirt. Some attribute it to her as the inventor of this garment, while others believe that she only popularized the creation attributed to the Spanish designer, Cristobal Balenciaga.
Eventually, the business became a huge success and her creations were sold all over the world in countries such as the United States, France, Italy, Switzerland, Kenya, Australia, Canada and South Africa. By this time, she had also expanded her brand to include a range of cosmetics and other fashion accessories.
Kwan revolutionized the way women dressed, and in the late 1960s, hot pants—extremely short shorts for women, made of luxurious fabrics such as velvet and silk—that were youthful, fun, and sexy at the same time, became popular.
The massive success of her fashion collection prompted her to expand her business and in the 70's and 80's she branched out into home goods and cosmetics as well. In 1988, Quant designed the interior for the Mini (1000).
Despite her worldwide fame, her cosmetics company Mary Quant Ltd. The most famous in Japan. She resigned as company director in 2000 following a Japanese buyout.
Mary Quant is the author of several books including Amount by Amount (1966), Color by Amount (1984), Amount on Makeup (1986), and The Classic Makeup and Beauty Book (1999).

In 1963, Mary Quan became the first winner of the Dress of the Year award.
She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her outstanding contribution to the fashion industry in 1966.
In 1990 she won the British Fashion Council Hall of Fame Award.
In the 2015 New Year Honours, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for the British Fashion Services.

She met her future husband, Alexander Plunkett Green, at Goldsmiths College in 1953. They married in 1957 and had one son. They had a happy marriage that lasted until Alexander's death in 1990.
