Google Unveils “Help Me Write” AI in Chrome
Google has introduced an experimental generative AI feature in its latest Chrome browser release, called “Help Me Write,” which can literally assist you in writing more descriptive sentences or even entire paragraphs from a short prompt. Here are 5 key things to know:
1. Leverages GEMINI Models
Google says the tool utilizes its own GEMINI models to understand the context of the web page you are browsing in order to provide relevant suggestions. If you were on a review page, for example, it may provide a suggestion that looks more like a review instead of a sales pitch.
2. Generates Full Paragraphs
In one of Google’s examples, the tool was able to provide a decent description of what a person was selling simply from a prompt saying: “Moving to smaller place need to sell air fryer for $50.” The tool suggested an entire paragraph that was better able to convey the user’s message.
3. Tweaking Tone and Length
As seen in Google’s examples, you can tweak the length and tone of a suggestion if the writing assistant’s first draft isn’t good enough to meet your needs. Once happy, you can click the “Replace” button to swap out your prompt for the suggested writing.
4. Accessing and Using the Tool
To enable the experimental feature, go to Settings in Chrome’s three-dot drop-down menu. There you can find the Experimental AI page where you can toggle on “Help Me Write.” To use it, simply select the text you want to rewrite and then right-click to invoke the “Help Me Write” box.
5. Currently English-Only on Windows & Mac
Notably, it is only available for Chrome browsers on Mac and Windows machines in the United States at this time. It can also only understand prompts and write suggestions in English for now.
Google first announced the arrival of the writing tool back in January, when it revealed that it would start baking more AI features into its Chrome browser. In addition to Help Me Write, Google said it is also bringing an AI-powered tab organizer and ability to create custom tags to the browser.
As generative AI progresses, Google is leveraging its advancements to introduce helpful writing tools that can save you time and effort right within Chrome. The experiments mark important steps toward making browsers smarter.
