Laureano Oubiña, 78, who was imprisoned for drug trafficking and money laundering, successfully sued Netflix for €15,000 for invasion of privacy in a Spanish court. The court ruled that Netflix must delete the scene, which appears in the opening moments of the series.
Lawsuit Details
Oubiña initiated legal action against Netflix upon the release of "Cocaine Coast," claiming the series caused him "moral damage" and sought €1.5 million in damages. His lawyer stated in 2023, "Mr. Laureano Oubiña's life has significantly deteriorated since the broadcast of this series because he is portrayed as a person capable of taking another person's life, violent, sexist, cocaine trafficker, impotent, evil, traitorous, bad father, bad husband, brutal, foolish, vengeful, abusive to women, ignorant, and a mafia member."
Court's Ruling
However, the court rejected these broader claims. The judge remarked that the series, "inspired by reality," is not bound by "a demand for truthfulness." They added that Oubiña's character in the series was not "entirely different" from the image and behavior he exhibited in real life.
