Venice Film Festival Unveils Official Poster for 81st Edition
The Venice Film Festival has revealed the official poster for its 81st edition, set to take place from August 28 to September 7, 2024. The poster, titled "Elephant in a Lake," was crafted by Italian artist Lorenzo Mattotti, who has been designing the festival's posters for six consecutive years.
The Symbolism Behind the Poster
Lorenzo Mattotti explains the inspiration behind the "Elephant in a Lake" poster:
"What is an elephant doing in a lake? It’s certainly an unusual and unexpected image, but it takes us back to a memory when an elephant arrived in Venice many years ago. The elephant wandered through the narrow streets of Venice during the famous Biennale Carnival in 1981."
This elephant now crosses the lake and travels through the realms of fantasy, mystery, and magic discovered in cinema. It is itself a memory and history of cinema: a celebration, a parade, a spectacle. This uniquely colored elephant also reminds us of the exotic, the distant, the East, and a look towards other civilizations and cultures. In performances, other worlds, languages, and illusions always met and have reached the lake for 92 years. The elephant, heading towards the East, has the power to welcome everyone.
Festival Highlights
In addition to unveiling the poster, the festival announced that Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" will be screened out of competition on the opening day, August 28.
