WhatsApp Introduces AI Feature for Personalized Avatars
New AI-Driven Avatar Creation
WhatsApp is developing a new artificial intelligence feature that will allow users to create personalized avatars for use in various scenarios. This new feature was spotted in the latest beta version of the WhatsApp app for Android (version 2.24.14.7) by WABetaInfo.
How It Works
The feature reportedly combines user-provided photos, text prompts, and Meta's Llama AI model to generate these avatars. A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo suggests that users can envision themselves "anywhere from a forest to outer space," producing results similar to those generated by AI tools like Lensa AI or Snapchat's "Dreams" feature.
To create a custom avatar, WhatsApp users will need to "take photos of themselves once," which will then be used to train Meta AI to generate images resembling the user in various settings. Users can create their avatars by typing "imagine me" followed by a description of the setting in a Meta AI chat or other WhatsApp conversations using "@Meta AI imagine me..."
Optional Feature
This feature will be optional and will require users to enable it manually in WhatsApp settings. WABetaInfo also notes that reference photos can be deleted at any time through Meta AI settings.
Availability
There is no indication yet of when the new Imagine AI feature will be generally available. WhatsApp is still rolling out support for its Meta AI chat program, including real-time AI image creation for users in the United States. Therefore, it may take some time before the new AI avatar feature is launched. Given the issues seen with previous generative AI tools, Meta may take a more cautious approach.
