Historic Day for Sinai: First Passenger Train Launches on El Ferdan - Bir al-Abd Line
In a significant milestone for Egypt’s infrastructure development, the first passenger train on the El Ferdan - Bir al-Abd railway line was successfully launched today. The event marked the start of the trial operation of the newly rehabilitated line in the presence of Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development, and Minister of Industry and Transport, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Transport and the Egyptian Railways Authority.
Reviving Rail in Sinai
The newly operational El Ferdan - Bir al-Abd railway spans 100 kilometers and is part of the first phase of a broader project aimed at revitalizing and expanding the railway network across Sinai. This project, totaling 500 kilometers, aims to connect El Ferdan, East Port Said, Bir al-Abd, Al-Arish, and Taba. As a critical part of the Arish-Taba logistics corridor, the railway is expected to play a major role in boosting comprehensive development efforts in the Sinai region.
Community Appreciation and National Pride
Residents of Sinai expressed deep gratitude to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for launching this significant project, which they described as a historic day for the people of Sinai. The new railway line symbolizes progress, unity, and pride, as it contributes to the ongoing wave of development projects across Egypt. Locals affirmed their unwavering support for the President and the government’s efforts to bring about comprehensive advancements in the region, calling it a source of pride for all Egyptians.
Economic Impact and Future Potential
Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir also witnessed the crossing of a freight train along the newly opened line, connecting East Port Said to other parts of Egypt through the national railway network. This is seen as a crucial step in improving Egypt’s logistics capabilities, particularly in transit cargo transport. Recently, the first container train journey from Dekheila Port to East Port Said was successfully completed, showcasing the new line’s strategic importance in freight movement.
During his media address at the Bir al-Abd station, El-Wazir emphasized that this day is a monumental occasion, not just for the people of Sinai but for all Egyptians, as it coincides with the 51st anniversary of Egypt’s October 6th victory. He highlighted how the new line would enhance passenger and freight transport, encourage new urban communities, support the growth of industrial zones, and lower transportation costs across North Sinai. The line is also expected to boost tourism by improving connectivity to the region’s tourist cities.
Finally
The El Ferdan - Bir al-Abd railway line is more than just a transport link—it is a symbol of hope, progress, and national pride. As it brings essential infrastructure to the heart of Sinai, it is set to transform the region, creating new opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and regional connectivity across Egypt.
